About Carl Marsak

Carl Marsak, M.A. was born in 1960 and raised in Santa Barbara, CA, graduating from Santa Barbara High School and U.C. Santa Barbara. He was raised Jewish, and has studied many other religious and spiritual traditions, including: Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, Sufism, Western Esotericism, the 4th Way, Christian Mysticism, Shamanism, the Egyptian and Greco-Roman Mysteries, Neo-Platonism, and more.


In the psychological domain he has deep understandings of Jungian, Archetypal and Integral Psychology, Psychosynthesis, Object-Relations, Kohutian and Developmental Psychology, and more. In his Enneagram work, Carl believes in creating places and centers where spiritual traditions and modern psychology can meet and weave together their respective insights and gifts.


He has graduate degrees in Religious Studies (New York University) and Social and Cultural Anthropology (California Institute of Integral Studies) and has been involved with the Enneagram since 1987. In addition, he has been professionally certified by Helen Palmer and David Daniels, M.D. as an Enneagram teacher in the Narrative Tradition, is an International Enneagram Association Accredited Professional, and a Professional Member of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology. He travels extensively, teaching the Enneagram of Personality to groups and individuals, as well as offering private typing interviews and spiritual counseling. 


Educational Background

  • 1986 - Graduated with Honors from the University of California at Santa Barbara, in Liberal Studies (religious studies, environmental studies, English literature).

  • 1990 - Graduated from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco with an M.A. in Social and Cultural Anthropology, with specialities in the anthropology of religion and intentional communities.

  •  2002 - Graduated from New York University with an M.A. in Religious Studies, with a focus on postmodern and feminist philosophy of religion.

Enneagram Background

  • 1987 - Introduced to the Enneagram in 1987 in San Francisco, CA.

  • 1993 to 1995 - Discovered personal Enneagram type. Read numerous Enneagram books and articles.

  • 1995-1997 - Attended numerous Enneagram workshops with well-known teachers.

  • 1998 - Taught first Enneagram workshop in Dharamsala, India, to over forty participants from over twelve countries.

  • 1999 - Taught two Enneagram workshops in Reykjavik, Iceland for staff and faculty members of an adult education college.

  • 1999 to 2002 - Graduate Teaching Assistant at NYU, in the Dept. of Religious Studies. Honed teaching skills. Continued Enneagram studies and practices. Began attending International Enneagram Association Conferences.

  • 2002 to 2004 - participated and graduated from the Enneagram Professional Training Program of Helen Palmer and David Daniels, M.D. Became a certified Enneagram teacher in the Narrative Tradition. Learned how to lead both typing and panel interviews.

  • 2005 to 2010 – studied and practiced with Sandra Maitri in her International Retreat Groups.

  • 2004 to present - created the Enneagram Center of Mt. Shasta (CA), and later The Enneagram Center of Ashland (OR). Taught numerous workshops and presentations in other places such as England, Scotland, Redding, CA, Santa Barbara, CA, Nevada City, CA, Philadelphia, PA., Toronto, Canada.

  • 2010 to present - taught the Enneagram many times to students at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Southern Oregon University, Ashland, OR.

Teaching Highlights

  • Presented the Enneagram to Hospice at Mercy Hospital, Mt. Shasta.

  • Taught the system to a large group of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers at the University of Pennsylvania Counseling Center in Philadelphia.

  • Lead an Enneagram workshop twice for members and long-term guests at the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland.

  • Taught two weekend workshops at the Dent Meditation Centre, Cumbria, England.

  • Offered free evenings to packed houses at Village Books in Mt. Shasta, CA, and the Wisdom Café and Gallery in Nevada City, CA.

  • Offered several workshops “Pay it Forward style,” including “Coping with Stress in Difficult Times: Using the Enneagram to Access Inner and Outer Resources.”

  • Taught a private one-day workshop to the staff at the Ashland Independent Film Festival, Ashland, OR.

  • Taught a private one-day workshop to the staff at Stewart Mineral Springs, Weed, CA.

  • Invited to be a guest speaker at the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2007, in a graduate class on Transpersonal Psychotherapy.

  • Presented in front of 500 people at the 2006 Wesak Festival in Mt. Shasta, CA.

  • Led a weekend workshop at The Spiritual Enrichment Center (Church of Religious Science) in Redding, CA.

  • Led groups on the topics of: “To Function as a Soul: Spiritual Initiation and the Enneagram” at the 2004 IEA Conference in Washington, D.C.; “Building the Rainbow Bridge: Theosophical Understandings of the Enneagram” at the 2007 IEA Conference in Redwood City, CA; “The Coming of Wisdom with Time: Applying Enneagram Theory and Practice to the Emerging Field of Transpersonal Gerontology” at the 2013 IEA Conference in Denver, CO; “The Enneagram of Aging: A Nine Points Panel of Spiritual Elders” at the IEA Conference in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA.

  • Published many articles in the Enneagram Monthly, Enneagram Journal, the Ashland Daily Tidings, the IEA Nine Points Forum, and on ashlandenneagram.com.

  • Presented on Transpersonal Gerontology and the Enneagram in Toronto for The Canadian Institute for Enneagram Studies.
